Kinectimals Now with Bears! Press Reactions

Oct 2011

We’re delighted at the positive critical reception for Kinectimals: Now With Bears! – here are a few of the early reactions from the media:

Using your hands, feet and voice you’ll soon be teaching them how to fish, juggle a ball, fetch, and even climb a tree. It turns out bears and their dog-like attributes are also perfect for the array of new toys and tricks for your new bear-buddy to learn as well. Kicking a virtual ball between the two of you or watching him hoon around on a remote control Warthog are surprisingly emotional experiences.
The bear gameplay alone offers up around ten hours of fur-bonding adventures, packed with fun activities and even an over-arching mystery in which players can solve the Fiddler’s quest.

Go for it. This game is adorable, sure, but where it really succeeds is with its motion control, which seems to give you a direct link with the cute animal on the screen. High-end visuals and animation work with this to complete the illusion of having this wild pet in your living room. And bears. How could you pass on bears? They lick the screen from the inside and you wipe off their slobber from the glass. How could you not be sold after knowing that?

The more I think about Kinectimals' game design, the more impressed I am. Perfectly pitched for kids.

Bears grunt, give small howls, and pant in the most adorable way, and if the sound in this game doesn't make you go "awwww" like a goofy little kid, you may not be human.

Shockingly enough, I could go on about this endearing children's game for longer than I can about many other, more difficult games. Make fun of me all you want, but I enjoyed wiping saliva off the TV screen and acting like a kid. And if you have a kid in your life—especially one who likes little furry things with eyes—there's a really good chance that Kinectimals will win them over, and get you off your ass and doing something with those arms of yours.

Kinectimals Press Reactions

Nov 2010

Kinectimals launches in the USA today alongside Kinect – here are a few of the early games media reactions:

Kinectimals is the real deal. It's a motion game that has many hours of unlocking gameplay content. It's a motion game that looks great in high-definition. And it's a motion game that uses a lot of the Kinect tricks, making this an unusually polished launch effort.

.. if you aren't immediately enchanted by your purring, prancing bundle of fur, it will only be a matter of minutes before you fall in love.

Of all the Kinect launch titles, this is perhaps the one with the most actual substance.

I've said "Aaaw look! Cute!" more times in the past week than I will probably ever say again for the rest of my life.

Kinectimals will keep you busy for hours.

In Kinectimals, Frontier has created a title that is not just incredibly adorable, but one that is also hugely engaging.

If you're looking for a rich gameplay experience jam packed with adorable creatures, look no further.

Flawless Kinect Controls. Beautiful visuals. It's absolutely adorable.

Frontier, Kinect and Kinectimals

Oct 2010

Frontier is very pleased that one of our games is playing a major role in the launch of Kinect, and we were delighted to be given that opportunity by our friends at Microsoft as the only third party developer working on a Microsoft Game Studios launch title.

When Microsoft first showed us what was to become Kinect, we immediately bought into the promise of such a new way of interacting with games and the immersion it would bring.  The unique freedom of standing infront of a game with nothing in your hands and interacting naturally puts a grin on people's faces that doesn't fade, and allows us as developers to envelop them in our fantasy to an unprecedented degree.

Kinect is new and different – it can bring in a whole new audience for games, and open up new ways for us to entertain people.  To us as developers this is the first step on a journey, and our imaginations run wild when we think of where such technology can lead.

Introducing Kinectimals

Oct 2010

A wide-eyed Bengal tiger cub cocks its head to the side and playfully peers at you. Memories of your first trip to the zoo come rushing back. Through the magic of Kinect that furry tiger cub is in your living room and about to become your best friend.

Kinectimals invites children, their parents and animal lovers of all ages to build lasting friendships with some of the world’s most exotic creatures. Just like real pets, your “Kinectimals” will come running when they hear your voice, respond to commands such as “jump,” “roll over” and “play dead,” and purr with joy when you scratch them behind their ears.

Details, Details, Details

Released in November 2010, Microsoft's Kinectimals invites you to...

  • Get in touch with your wild side. Your journey begins when you adopt and name one of 20 playful friends, including a lion, cheetah and Bengal tiger.
  • Create memories that last a lifetime. From the first time she recognizes her name to when she learns to fetch, your cub will grow up as your sidekick, eager to discover the island around you. She will always be ready for a scratch and a belly rub with smiles and purrs.
  • Teach new tricks. There are new ways to train tricks such as fetch, play activities such as jump rope, and even master agility courses with hops, stops and balancing acts. Invite a friend with his or her pet for some fun contests.
  • Discover, collect and customize. “Kinectimals” rewards those who are curious about the island they live on. Travel far and wide to discover treasures and toys, and find and unlock new environments. You can customize your pet and decorate your home, plus use the in-game store to shop for items to nurture and care for your new best friend.
  • Grow your “Kinectimals” family. Collectible, limited-edition plush toys will be available online and at popular retail stores. Choose your new friend, scan the code with the Kinect sensor, then watch it come to life on the screen right before your eyes. With your very own plush pal you can keep your new friend with you even when you’re away from your Xbox 360.
